Steph Wallace is a ceramic artist based in Ballarat on Wadawurrung Country. Steph’s work is deeply rooted in her connection to the landscape, through her work she weaves narratives that reflect the complexities of cultural identity and the legacies of colonialism on the contemporary landscape.
Steph’s practice challenges established norms by combining traditional techniques with experimental approaches. Her work serves as a platform for dialogue, encouraging reflection and understanding of diverse histories. In engaging with clay, Steph adds depth to her exploration of land by using it as the very medium for creative expression.
In addition to maintaining a significant online presence, Steph’s work has been showcased in exhibitions worldwide including Michael Reid galleries, UNESCO CraftLab and The Art Gallery of Ballarat. The artist has been awarded finalist in the National Emerging Art Prize 2023 and the Klytie Pate ceramics prize 2023. Her work has been featured in various publications, including The Washington Post and The Age.
The artist studied fine art Leeds Art University and has a BA in ceramics from Edinburgh College of Art, Steph’s artistic journey has also included directing an independent art gallery and teaching ceramics at Federation University. These diverse experiences have shaped her artistic vision, adding depth and significance to her body of work.
Steph’s artistic leadership extends beyond her creative output as demonstrated via an arts podcast that has captivated over 144,000 listens and her partnership with ABC as a ‘Creative Correspondent’, a collaboration underscoring her position as an influential voice in the arts.
