Cody Winward creates botanical forms that bloom a second life into recycled materials including fabric scraps and aluminium cans. Cody is inspired by nature, travel and the powerful meanings surrounding flowers and their function. Her work incorporates both traditional and modern flower making techniques to create artworks which grow into meaningful keepsakes.
Cody founded Windlewood back in 2016 after changing career paths on her return back to Australia. At the time she was working at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London as a wardrobe assistant. With her visa coming to an end, she decided to take all of my inspiration and experience and launch her own linen fashion label “Windlewood”. Previously she completed fashion design training before studying costume making so it was such a treat to combine the two. The next 4 years were filled with many garments, pop up shops, markets and beautiful customers. In 2020, she made the decision to make flowers instead…
SO WHY LINEN FLOWERS?
In its simplest form… I wanted to provide a product that could help people and something that was more than just an object. After loosing my Dad in 2017, I had my first big encounter with just how powerful flowers can be. I was so grateful to be able to feel our friend’s and family’s hugs every time I looked at the bouquets of flowers during those early days of grief. They got me through. This planted a seed (pardon the pun!) and 3 years later when I was reassessing where I wanted Windlewood to head, things fell into place. I was waving a friend goodbye who’s week had been really tough and I was thinking “I wish I could do more”. A bit airy fairy, but there and then I had a vision of a bouquet of flowers made out of linen. And that very afternoon my hands got to work and made my very first prototype.
