Christine Lethlean

Christine Lethlean

Christine Lethlean is a textile artist with over 35 years of practice, recognised for her distinctive use of colour, texture, and rudimentary stitch as a form of expressive mark-making. Often described as an outsider artist, her work reflects a self-taught and intuitive approach that blends diverse techniques, materials, and ideas.

Christine believes that textile art can act as a powerful catalyst for reflection and conversation. Her work often explores themes of memory, identity, and material culture, using cloth as both medium and metaphor. Through layering, stitching, and repurposing, she creates pieces that are both visually engaging and conceptually rich, asking us to examine what we value, what we forget, and how textiles can hold stories of both the personal and collective.

Whether working on wall pieces, sculptural forms, or wearable art, Christine continues to challenge the boundaries of her medium. Her evolving body of work is grounded in curiosity, resourcefulness, and a desire to make meaningful connections between people, materials, and ideas.

I'm interested in

In addition to networking, connection, teaching opportunities, and exhibiting, I’m looking to be part of a vibrant, supportive creative community that values dialogue, collaboration, and growth. I’m interested in learning from other artists’ practices, sharing ideas and resources, and staying informed about regional arts opportunities across the shire and more broadly the state. I also hope to contribute to a broader conversation around the role of the arts in community, personal storytelling and mentoring. Being part of Arts Atlas Ballarat offers the chance to build meaningful professional relationships and expand the reach and impact of my creative work.
