Request for Quote – City of Ballarat, project officer (contractor) – Craft Lab 22
The City of Ballarat is seeking a short-term part time contractor to assist in the coordination and further development of the Craft Lab in May 2022. The event is an initiative of the UNESCO Creative City of Crafts & Folk Art program.
As part of Ballarat’s commitment to the artisanal and the well-crafted, the City of Ballarat plans to annually host a celebration of expertise and demonstration. A selection of the finest makers from Ballarat and surrounding regions gather in one location. Heritage trades, fine crafts and contemporary practice combined.
Included as part of the Ballarat 2021 Heritage Festival, the inaugural Craft Lab in 2021 brought together practices passed down generations, reinterpreted and contemporised. From the fine practice of loom weaving, complex embroidery, natural dyeing, shoe making, and leatherwork to furniture making and musical instrument crafting, dry stone wall construction and bow making.
This was a rare chance to engage with First Nations crafts which are specific to our region. This included the intricate task of weaving eel traps and a rare chance to help craft a ceremonial possum skin cloak for our community. The event attracted over 2,500 visitors between lockdowns in 2021, a record achievement for an event in its first year.
