Irene Harmsworth

Born in Melbourne I received my early education.

I then moved to Sydney in 1980 and later, in 1984, entered the East Sydney Technical College (now known as the National Australian Art School) in Darlinghurst where I graduated with a Diploma in Fine Arts with components including painting, sculpture, photography etc. On graduation I operated my own studio and gallery from premises in McKenzie Arcade, Pitt Street, Sydney before contracting my graphic design skills to the NSW Government Department of Mineral Resources (2000 – 2002) and then the Commonwealth Government Defence Department (2002 – 2008). Simultaneously I undertook many portrait commissions and had works accepted in numerous exhibitions including Sydney’s Portia Geach Prize as well as archival portraits for the State Library of the Northern Territory, Silos Winery and the Precinct Gallery, both located at Berry in NSW. I relocated back to Victoria in 2009.

My passion is in painting portraits in all media, and I have painted portraits from life at Mt Best Community Centre, South Gippsland in 2010, Pyrenees Art Exhibition in 2013, I also took part in a live art event in 2015 at Chapel Street called Art-Town that followed with a group exhibition at Chapel Off Chapel Street Gallery, Melbourne.

In April 2016 I painted a black and white watercolour of Greg Grainger presenter Travel OZ channel 7 at the Blue Pyrenees Estate Avoca which was part of the Pyrenees Unearthed Festival.
Since moving to Victoria in 2009 I have perused with exhibiting my artwork. As follows are some of the Galleries and Art Prizes where my work has been selected:
In December Dec 2014- Jan 2015 my painting “Dreaming” was part of a group exhibition which was held in the Ballarat Regional Art Gallery “Director’s Cut” Exhibition.

As I also enjoy painting and redesigning historic themes my painting “Whatever happened to them?” (Ballarat Gold Fields late 1800’s) was selected for the “Body of Work Exhibition” held at the Back Space Gallery, Ballarat Gallery. Oct 2015- Nov 2015.
At the Avoca Information Centre Gallery, Victoria there is currently an exhibition of my prints and drawings which depict the Gold Rush in Central Victoria and NSW.
My painting “Grape Harvesting Pioneers 1895” was selected as one of the finalist for the Fleurieu Food Wine & Art Prize which will be held in McLaren Vale South Australia 4th June – 29th July 2016.
