Wild Clay

Learn how to dig your own ‘wild clay’ from the earth in this messy hands-on experience. Join workshop leader and Ballarat potter Steph Wallace in identifying and processing clay for ceramic use directly from the earth on the Australian Centre For Rare Arts and Forgotten Trades site.

Steph Wallace is a visual artist working on Wadawurrung country, Ballarat. Creating from her studio located behind the Australian Centre for Rare Arts and Forgotten Trades site, her art explores her place within this landscape and draws parallels between invasive species, colonialism and her own lived experiences. Her artwork has international renown and appears in collections and publications worldwide.

With an exhibition of her ceramics planned for 2023 at The Art Gallery Of Ballarat, Steph’s recent work of porcelain vessels inlaid with delicate illustrations of invasive species embodies her evolving understanding of the land and society within which she practices. This work is created using traditional methodologies and materials as well as local clays foraged from the land around her studio.
