This introduction workshop to Sumie Zen Brush painting will guide participants through this discipline made famous by the Zen monks in Japan who painted in order to train their minds in observation, patience & art technique.

A reflective quietened mind which leads to a peaceful heart and spirit is, The Way of Zen Sumie.  Rice paper, a brush and monochrome black ink are the simple tools used.

Focus

The class will be hands on plus insights into the origins of Zen and why paint in this style and how it links to the universe we live and breath in.  Zen is a training of the mind not a religion.  The aim is to dissolve simply into the landscape and join nature so as to not harm and live peacefully free of ego. But to do that we must be fearless like a samurai undaunted by death/change/the challenge ahead.

Teacher: Gerard a Tai Chi and Aikido teacher with a Masters in Asia studies brings to each student a rich background & perspective from Asia where he has studied and lived.  Gerard has toured schools, been Artist in residence in Vic and SA colleges/schools taught in Adult education and exhibited widely.He has worked and toured all over Asia and lived in Japan.
