‘Shaping Evolution’ Art exhibition by Gordon Monro
01/10/2016 - 31/10/2016
FreeThis exhibition includes a unique selection of digital prints accompanied by silent video. The artist Gordon Monro draws inspiration for his visual art from a different perspective, that of science and mathematics. His artworks are created by computer programs that he writes, taking the form of digital prints, videos and computer-based installations. The imaginary creatures in Shaping Evolution were evolved by a computer program. Each creature has “DNA” (a small amount of data in the computer) that generates its image. The creatures were evolved from random starting DNA by processes of “breeding”, “mutation” and “survival of the fittest”, carried out automatically in the computer. In some cases, 200 generations of evolution were carried out before the image was created.
Gordon is a resident of Ballarat and has a PhD in Pure Mathematics. He also recently completed his second PhD in Fine Art at Monash University.
