‘Rare Trades’ Exhibition Artist Talks

14 February, 2016 @ 12:00 am - 20 February, 2016 @ 4:00 pm

FREE

In association with the Rare Trades exhibition, Backspace Gallery proudly presents two artists talks designed to take visitors into the background of the burgeoning ‘old trades’ movement and the processes of two uniquely-skilled Rare Trades artisans.

Sunday, 14 February from 2pm        Love books? Then what better way to spend Valentine’s Day than learning the whats & hows of fine bookbinding!  Sonya Macdonald talks about the genesis of the Rare Trades Australia network, then demonstrates the materials & processes she uses in her bookbinding practice. Sonya will also demonstrate the use of the handmade plow shaver on display in Backspace Gallery, the crown jewel of her working tools.

Saturday, 20 February from 2pm       If like us, you love shoes, then a talk by shoe- and bootmaker Duncan McHarg should be on your bucket list! Duncan fashions his beautiful footware by hand from beginning to end: the lasts are carved for each client, the designs & leathers created to order, and each piece is hand-stitched using no machines whatsoever. Duncan even makes his own tools & materials by hand! They may be pricey, but these shoes are made for you & you only!
