Mindful Musical Improvisation
03/03/2013 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm
$15
Mindful musical improvisation with sound, words and rhythm.
An invitation to a series of workshops.
Improvising is a great way to find the music inside you.
It is like composing on the spot.
It is something that is fed by the ideas of others around you, and can be quite amazing whether what comes out of you is harmonious or dissonant, rhythmic or melodic, whether it is a continuous sound or a sound broken by silences.
In the true style of improvisation, this is a place where you will have a chance to be curious and play with others, led in a gentle coming to “be with” yourself by musically relating with others, allowing music to emerge through listening, and doing. You will be guided by Chris as we will be joining together, using techniques she has learned from both running groups, and being a part of them.
There will be very gentle warm ups as a way of entering into making sounds that connect with other’s sounds. The courage, energy and fun that transpires may surprise you.
About me.
I’m new to Ballarat and I would love to share my technique with you.
I am a musician/composer and have an Experiential Creative Arts Therapy Graduate Diploma. For the past seven years I have been a part of an improvisation group in Melbourne called ‘Creative Voice’ which is the brainchild of Hilde Knottenbelt. I have also worked in community theatre for many years with Catherine Simmonds, Brunswick Women’s Theatre, where I sculpted the voices of people from varying community groups using their life stories as a way to paint vocal pictures of their traumatic backgrounds.
I was inspired to study experiential creative arts in order to help people by using music from a felt sense within, as a tool for fun, relaxation, or as a way to find meaning. Rather than using prescribed music, songs or lyrics that can create barriers for self-expression, I am interested in whatever is inside being expressed through music.
My aim is to provide a supportive, creative environment for all, and to explore the richness of your lives through the use of varying skills that I will teach you, with the aim of developing empowerment through increased self esteem and much noise making with others who wish for the same. What I am inviting you to take part in is not a music therapy group, but in my experience, I have seen how therapeutic an experience it can be.
If you have an instrument and wish to use it, please bring it along. If you would rather use your voice, please bring that along.
This series has already started, but call me to see if there is a chance at becoming a ‘drop-in’. I’m also interested in your needs for times/days for the next series. It seems that the first day was very successful and that many others would come if it was on a weeknight. So I will happily run a weeknight series next season.
