Mad Forest
by Caryl Churchill
Directed by Bryce Ives
“Did we have a revolution or a putsch? And who was shooting on the 22nd?Was the army shooting on the 21st or did some shoot and some not shoot or were Securitate disguised in army uniforms?”
In December 1989 students and young people led a bloody revolution in Romania. The extraordinary communist leader Nicolae Ceausescu and his wife Elena, pre-eminent scientist and Mother of the Nation, would be tried and executed on Christmas Day, their execution broadcast live on television.
In 2014 another group of young people, this time in Ballarat, investigate Caryl Churchill’s ‘Play from Romania’ and consider revolution and regime change as a metaphor for history’s radical unpredictability. Within the silence and pauses, a world of ambiguity, conflict and unanswerable questions emerge.
