Artist Statement:
“I have always been conscious that a strong portrait is one which looks out at you from the wall. Those that do “LOOK OUT” (the eyes have it) are the portraits that talk to me. Fairbanks Eye Gallery has given me a most suitable and appropriate venue to test this observation, with some recent drawings. Spending so much time working in Northern Australia, Indonesia and Europe, I have seen so many faces from different cultures wearing many different ‘looks’ from varying circumstances – sometimes sad – other times the opposite. The magic arrives, not only when the likeness emerges from the lines and shapes and paint, but when some unspoken words are heard to come from the subject . I hope in this exhibition everybody will find at least one face that speaks to them.” – Geoff Todd
