Eliza-Jane Gilchrist: Strange Garden

01/12/2018 @ 10:00 am - 17/01/2019 @ 5:00 pm

EXHIBITION DATES
& OPENING HOURS
1 December 2018 – 17 March 2019
Open 10am – 5pm daily

Eliza-Jane Gilchrist is a Castlemaine-based artist who creates sculptural installations out of cardboard, a readily available material which is often considered rubbish. In Strange Garden, Gilchrist imagines that cardboard retains a cellular memory of being a plant which wants to reform itself into organic shapes.

She draws inspiration from shapes and patterns found in the natural world, including seedpods, bones and shells, to highlight the strangeness of the microscopic and minute. By working with packaging material, a symbol of the excessive consumerism of the modern world, Gilchrist invites a reappraisal of the value of the discarded and re-invests the mundane with significance.

Strange Garden is presented alongside a selection of works from the Art Gallery of Ballarat collection which feature abstracted plant forms, imagined gardens and fantastical botanical creations, by artists including Criss Canning, Fiona Hall, Robyn Mayo, James Morrison, Jim Paterson and Angeline Pwerle Ngala.
