Coat of Arms by Narritjin Maymuru
4 August, 2015 - 1 December, 2015
On display at M.A.D.E for a limited time is rare bark painting Coat of Arms by Narritjin Maymuru (1963). Maymuru is a highly respected Aboriginal artist recently featured in the National Museum of Australia’s exhibition Old Masters: Australia’s Great Bark Artists.
This significant indigenous artwork re-imagines the Australian Coat of Arms with symbols of Yolnu law. Well known for sharing the significance of Aboriginal stories with non-Aboriginal audiences, Maymuru combines both western and traditional motifs. As a respected artist and elder of north-east Arnhem Land, Narritjin Maymuru believed art could be a conduit between the two cultures.
