Ballarat Mechanics’ Institute Presents: ANTELODIC

20/10/2018 @ 10:30 am

FREE

Melbourne chamber-jazz trio Antelodic are visiting Victoria’s rural independent bookshops, art galleries and libraries, performing their unique style of music in alternative spaces. The tour of free concerts will promote the release of last year’s album “Quiet Sufficient” and allow them to road-test new material for their next release.Antelodic is an instrumental trio formed in 2012 by members of Melbourne contemporary jazz ensemble “cleverhorse”. Led by Robbie Melville, the ensemble features the unique combination of guitar with two saxophones – Gideon Brazil on tenor and Monty Mackenzie on alto. Antelodic began as an experiment in which the saxophones worked as a rhythm section whilst the guitar became the melodic voice. For four years the trio has experimented with various compositional styles and arranging techniques, developing a unique sound that spans chamber jazz and contemporary classical.

“There is a translucency to these compositions that is quite mesmerising. Monty Mackenzie and Gideon Brazil seemed to revel in the technical and tonal demands required to achieve the subtlety and grace demanded by Robbie Melville’s compositions” – Paul Simmons

The music of Antelodic draws equally on the jazz aesthetic of Jimmy Giuffre, the singer-songwriter tradition of Joni Mitchell, the deep soul of Krystle Warren, the atmospheric impressionism of Debussy, the folk stylings of Lau and the experimental sonic journeys of Bill Frisell. Gentle, optimistic, lyrical and engaging.
