Backspace Gallery – Between Lines exhibition

08/04/2016 @ 12:00 am - 01/05/2016 @ 4:00 pm

FREE

In the exhibition Between Lines, a theatre-maker and a visual artist share family letters, documentation, conversations, archival images – and their respective skills – in exploring different perspectives on the experiences of WWI. The resulting collaborative show features work based on WWI family letters from three brothers.

Artist Carol Kite is an award-winning printmaker whose work incorporates drawing, painting & found objects, and is presented as both wall-hung work and as artist books or small sculptures. Illustrating the words of three brothers from Ballarat, she expresses their longing for home as a visual diary of places, memories & experiences linked by the themes of duty and loss.

Artist Tammie Kite is a theatre-maker known for creating strong work connected to storytelling, music & design. In Between Lines, she concentrates on the passing of information through the ephemeral vehicles of radio broadcasts & propaganda. While lacking the immediacy of personal letters, her work establishes the faceted background to the experiences at the foundation of the exhibition.

Invested in engaging Ballarat in a creative conversation about their work, Carol & Tammie will host a special ‘Dogs In War Day’ on Saturday, 16 April to commemorate the role of canines on the war front and close out the exhibition with Artists Talks on Sunday, 1 May.
